Current Position:  Research Associate (Post Doc) at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education
I am currently working as a Research Associate under Professor Frackson Mumba on a National Research Foundation funded project investigating improving undergraduate students’ performance in science courses through the implementation of problem-based inquiry laboratories in Chemistry, Physics and Biology with Teaching Assistants as leaders of the inquiry-based instruction.

Life Sciences Programme Co-ordinator and Senior Tutor for Distance Education Programme of the College of Science, University of the Witwatersrand  (January 2001 – December 2001)

Contracted on a part-time basis to manage and co-ordinate set up and pilot the Life Sciences component of the College of Sciences Certificate in Science, a distance programme of the first year College of Science course.

    • Co-ordinator and Learner support: Co-ordinate and manage the programme and support distance learners.
    • Materials Developer: Development of tutorial material and assignments.
    • Senior Tutor: Tutored the distance learners face-to-face once a month and tutored two groups of learners within the full-time College of Science programme.

Contract Work for the Independent Examinations Board (ABET Directorate) as an Examiner and Moderator of Assessment (2000 – 2003)

  • Developed and set the 2001, 2002 and 2003 ASECA Life and Earth Sciences and the ASECA Physical Sciences examinations for the IEB, which were moderated and controlled by SAFCERT.
  • Marked ASECA Mathematics papers in 1998, the ASECA Life Sciences Papers (in 2001 and 2002) and the Physical Sciences paper (2002).
  • Moderated the Physical Sciences Paper (2001).

Other Work Experience

  • Quality Controller and Content Checker (Part-time) of Grade 8 to 12 Biology videos produced by MEMAR TV contracted to produce digital video programmes by the Ethiopian Educational Ministry for broadcasting across Ethiopia (2002 – 2003).
  • Taught at Glenvista High School (January 1994 – March 1994). Temporary post as Standard 6, 7 and 8 Biology teacher in the post of a teacher on maternity leave.
  • Taught at Glenanda Primary School (April 1994 – December 1994). Temporary post as Standard 3, 4 and 5 General Science teacher in the post of a teacher seconded to Glenvista High School.
