Travel

There are plenty of things you can gain from exploring different places. The list includes gaining new friends, new experiences, and new stories. When you start exploring new places, you get a better understanding of the people living there, including their culture, history and background. Studies show that travelling can improve your overall health and enhance your creativity.

I’ve travelled both locally and internationally. There are benefits to travelling and these include:

  • Improves social and communication skills. …
  • Ensures peace of mind. …
  • Helps you get original and creative thoughts. …
  • Broadens your horizons. …
  • Enhances Your Tolerance for Uncertainty. …
  • Boosts confidence. …
  • Gets you real-life education.
  • Creates memories for a lifetime.
  • Helps you have fun.
  • Aids you to get to know yourself.

Cape Verde 1999

In July 1999 I travelled to Cape Verde with a work colleague. Her brother had made a bid for the tickets on the SAA website and couldn’t use them. So she invited me. We landed on the Island of Sal. We flew to the Islands of Santiago and then on to Antão and São Vicente. From here we caught a ferry to São Nicolau before flying back to Sal.

Cape Town 1998/1999

In December 1998 I visited Cape Town for the first time with a group of friends, including my best friend Mark Kavanaugh. We camped at the caravan park in Muizenberg. We arrived just after Christmas and spent time visiting wine farms including Groote Schuur,a trip to Cape Point and clubbing.

Cape Town 2004/2005

In December 2004 I visited Cape Town again with my partner and his business partner and his wife. We stayed in the Stellendal Guest House. We visited The Strand, Ratanga Junction, Rondebosch Botanical Gardens and took the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. We also flew on a six-seat airplane around Cape Town, visited Seal Island and took a boat trip to Robbin Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned by the Apartheid Government.

Mabalingwe 2004

During the winter school holidays in July 2004 we visited Mabalingwe Nature Reserve in Bela-Bela, a town in Limpopo Province. Mabalingwe is a 9 500 hectare landscape in the South African bushveld with abundant birdlife, stunning indigenous trees and shrubs and a wide variety of wildlife. We stayed in self-catering units and took game drives in the day and in the evenings.

Pilanesberg National Park

Pilanesberg National Park is set within the crater of an ancient volcano, formed 1.2 billion years ago by overflowing magma. The park exists in a transition zone between the dryness of the Kalahari and the wet Lowveld vegetation. This rich transitional zone attracts an incredible variety of game animals, flora and fauna that are not often found living side by side. I have visited the park more than once. The first time was in 1992 on a Botany III field trip. I also visited the park in 2006.

Sun City, North West

Sun City in South Africa is internationally recognized for its superb resort offering of hotels, attractions and world-class events. I first visited Sun City as a teenager with my parents. In 2006 I visited it again with my partner and we spent the day in the Lost City. I’ve also spent Christmas Day with my family at the Valley of the Waves.
