Non-degree Purposes

After completing my Undergraduate degree and in order to fulfill the additional requirement of passing Physics I to be awarded the Higher Diploma in Education. I registered for Physics I in 2007 and completed two modules a year, and finished Physics I at the end of 2008. In 2009 I registered for Chemistry II modules. These modules were completed at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Unisa is the largest open distance learning institution in Africa and the longest standing dedicated distance education university in the world. We enrol nearly one-third of all South African students.

Founded in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, the institution became the first public university in the world to teach exclusively by means of distance education in 1946.

I was able to complete the UNISA Physics and Chemistry modules remotely without regular face-to-face contact with a lecturer. Since I was teaching and involved in school management this allowed me to both work and study. At undergraduate level, distance learning involved engaging with learning materials at home or work (a textbook and a study guide) and required  assignments to be completed and posted for assessment. Tutorial support via a virtual learning environment, phone, email or other electronic means was available. There were occasional face-to-face interactions with tutors and attendance of a week-long practical session was required for both Physics and each Chemistry Module completed.

Physics I

The Physics I course consisted of four semester modules. These were:

 Mechanics – PHY1505

Electromagnetism and Heat – PHY1506

Modern Physics – PHY1604

Physics Practical Work I – PHY1503
